DR. STEPHANIE BALTERS
Let's build connection, growth, and impact with neuroscience-backed innovation that will unlock our full human potential.
As the Director of the Empowerment Neuroscience Lab and a faculty member at the Stanford School of Medicine, I am able to leverage my background in mechanical engineering (BA, Master's, and PhD degrees), together with my personal passion for self-growth, to explore the neuroscience of human flourishing. My work is interdisciplinary and often draws upon principles of human-machine interaction and design science that I learned from my time at Stanford's Center for Design Research and Computer Science.
To harness neuroscience to catalyze human flourishing. My work is used to help individuals and teams unlock self-growth and drive meaningful change across science, education, and business with measurable performance outcomes.
In my research, I use neuroimaging to explore factors that limit our potential—such as trauma and cultural biases—as well as those that enable flourishing. By studying brain function both within individuals and among teams, I gain insights into emotional reactivity, cognition, and behavior, and how these elements influence team well-being, collaboration, and performance. Based on these insights, I design and implement targeted interventions that promote resilience, enhance team dynamics, and foster environments where innovation and personal growth can thrive.
I also conduct team leadership workshops aimed at fostering psychological safety and trust—critical elements that enhance team well-being, elevate performance, and unlock innovation potential. I am deeply passionate about embracing authenticity and individual differences, transforming adverse experiences into opportunities for self-growth and workplace flourishing. My workshops, held at institutions like Stanford University, UCSF, and NATO, have won several awards for creating environments where teams can connect deeply, collaborate effectively, and drive meaningful change together.
I am seeking allies—business leaders, policymakers, philanthropists, scientists, and educators—who are committed to co-creating solutions through deep exploration within themselves and their teams. The challenges we face in the world often mirror our own inner landscapes, and through authentic exploration and connection, we can address these challenges and transform them into innovative solutions. Together, let’s unlock our full potential and introduce new ways of thinking, learning, and leading into the world, trusting that as we evolve, our projects and their impact will grow as well.
Unlocking the next big idea requires embracing ambiguity and navigating uncharted territory. Drawing on principles from early-stage product development, I work with scientists, educators, business leaders, and policymakers to create innovative approaches for collaboration, negotiation, and conflict resolution. I utilize tools like low-resolution prototyping, rapid testing, and agile development to explore problem and solution spaces, driving innovation across disciplines. By testing ideas early and at low cost, we advance through a dynamic, iterative process that leads to transformative solutions.
